Amory school preparing hanging flower baskets for New Albany

NEMiss.news Amory tech school flower baskets

A technical school in Amory in Monroe County is preparing hanging flower baskets to be hung this spring in downtown New Albany.

Warner Creekmore, a New Albany resident, teaches horticulture at the Monroe County Career and Technical Education Center (CTE) in Amory. The CTE draws students from five different area schools.

Since the school year began Creekmore’s students have been working with seeds and bulbs that will produce the flowers for decorative baskets to beautify downtown New Albany.

The baskets the CTE horticulture students are growing for New Albany will feature pink, purple and coral Bougainvilleas, a variety of colored Verbena, Dracaena, and Creeping Jenny.

The Bougainvilleas will act as the basket “thrillers.” The Creeping Jenny will be the basket “spillers,” and the Verbena and Dracaena as the basket “fillers.”

To protect the flowers from late freezes and to ensure plenty of water and humidity, the baskets will be kept in the CTE greenhouses in Amory until about mid-May.

The Monroe County Career and Technical Education Center serves students from Aberdeen, Amory and Nettleton.
