High speed chase involving stolen vehicle ends near hospital

Update:

Sheriff Jimmy Edwards said the high-speed chase Wednesday afternoon involved a stolen vehicle.

“We got information that a vehicle stolen out of Memphis might be coming through here,” Edwards said. “Deputies set up at Blue Springs.”

The car indeed did come through headed back toward Memphis and deputies verified the tag as stolen and gave chase.

More officers joined the chase that ended on I-22 across from Lowe’s, just east of the Hwy. 30 exit.

“When they got to the one-lane road they ran off the road and took out some signs,” the sheriff said. “The vehicle was damaged and the air bags deployed.”

Four occupants were taken into custody: two Black males, one Black female and one Black female juvenile.

Anterio Clark

Sheriff Edwards said Union County is charging Anterio Clark, 19, of Memphis, with possession of a stolen vehicle, felony fleeing and other traffic offenses. Edwards said he is not charging the other occupants of the car at this time.

All four were in custody at the jail late Wednesday while it was being determined whether Memphis or Shelby County officers planned to come get them. Clark cannot be formally charged until the justice court clerk’s office opens Thursday.

Original story

Westbound traffic on I-22 between the downtown and hospital exits was at a crawl shortly after 4 p.m. as officers investigated the conclusion of a high-speed chase that started a few miles east of New Albany.

Officers from the city aided in trying to block the vehicle as sheriff’s officers had initiated the pursuit. Close to a dozen vehicles became involved.

The vehicle finally ran off the road, apparently damaging highway signs in the process, where traffic was being restricted to one lane due to road maintenance east of the Hwy. 30 exit.

Deputies at this time are still interviewing the suspects and trying to verify identities and it is not known yet what led to the chase. More information should be available in a little while.
