Kevin Thornton: been there, wrote about it, sings it

August 16th, 2015     Leisure and entertainment

Here in Mississippi, we have the good fortune to have access to a seemingly inexhaustible supply of musicians of all genres. There truly is something for every taste.

Back in July we stumbled across Kevin Thornton performing at Gabriel’s in Tupelo, and have kept up with him since then. We knew that he was performing again Saturday night, and decided to drop by for a second dose. We were not disappointed.

Thornton was already performing when we arrived, and stopped by our table to say “hi” between sets.  Once my husband finished his meal, he moved to my side of the booth so that he could see Thornton, as well as hear him, because Kevin does not merely “sit and sing.” He sings and growls and, occasionally, scats his way through a mixture of his own songs and his stylized versions of well-known oldies, providing both strings and an almost unremitting percussion with his guitar. His body is in constant motion, accented by his white-socked feet.

White socks for accent.

White socks for accent.

Kevin’s original songs have some killer lyrics, mostly very personal and earthy, though they are sometimes difficult to discern over the din of a restaurant (buy a CD for your car). Thornton has “been there” in his 41 years, and his songs tell the story well.

We lingered and listened until we had to head back home to our business. We will track him down again in the future.kevin
