New Albany Light, Gas and Water still closed

The Cleveland Street office of the New Albany Light, Gas and Water Department remains closed, although manager Bill Mattox said the plan is to  reopen it Monday, Aug. 31.

The closing came last week when several of the small staff tested positive for the coronavirus. City officials deemed it unsafe to operate with only a few employees, even if some were in the office only on alternate days.

Mattox said some of those who were positive are coming back to work but because they expected traffic to be slow the next couple days they decided to wait through the weekend before reopening the lobby and drive-through window service.

Customers can pay bills by mail, by using the drop box beside the drive-through window or online at https://paybill.com/nalgw/.

If a customer needs new service or is transferring or discontinuing service he or she is asked to call 534-1041 to schedule an appointment.

Although the office is closed, crews are still responding to calls concerning power outage, gas leaks and water or sewer issues.
