Wednesday was a busy day for law enforcement with officers following up on a shooting incident, investigating a possible assault with a vehicle and pursuit of burglars that ended up with a van stopped on railroad tracks.

Police Chief Chris Robertson called NEMiss.News from the scene of the second investigation Wednesday to report that incident had interrupted their efforts concerning the first.

About 5 p.m. Tuesday, police received a call about shots fired on Honeysuckle Drive in the Colonial Gardens Subdivision.

Robertson said the incident apparently sprang from an ongoing family dispute.

A group was talking in front of a residence on the 900 block when a vehicle came by and several shots were fired.

No one was injured but officers later recovered a number of shell casings, the chief said.

The victims were able to provide a description of the vehicle, which police located and stopped on Main Street near Tallahatchie Gourmet.

A male and female suspect were taken into custody and a weapon was recovered, Robertson said.

He did not have the names of the suspects at hand when he called, and said he had not determined which individuals would be charged or what the charges would be.

He hoped to know later but investigation was interrupted when officers received a call that a person had been hit by a vehicle. This also happened in Colonial Gardens but there was no immediate indication that it was related to the Tuesday shooting.

Robertson did say there was some suspicion the incident was not accidental.

That investigation was just starting when the chief called.

The third incident involved the Union County Sheriff’s Department.

They reportedly received a call from a resident on County Road 51 who returned home to find someone taking items from her home.

She was able to provide a description and information about a likely suspect and after deputies began sweeping the area they stopped and took into custody at gunpoint two suspects in Myrtle. The vehicle they were in was stopped on the Burlington Northern Railroad tracks and a train was westbound from New Albany, but the train apparently was stopped in plenty of time.

Again, the investigation was just beginning and no more information was available at the time of this posting.
