County schools performing Shrek the Musical at Magnolia Civic Center

Update:

As of Friday afternoon, a few scattered seats remained for the three scheduled performances. Due to overall demand and COVID pandemic seating restrictions, a 1 p.m. Saturday matinee performance has been added to the Friday and Saturday evening and Sunday matinee shows. If the county school central office is closed, go to the civic center box office for tickets prior to showtime.

Original story:

Union County Schools presented preview performances of Shrek the Musical this week for student groups prior to public shows Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The play is based on the Oscar-winning DreamWorks Animation film and the following Tony Award-winning stage version.

It is the story of a grumpy ogre and wisecracking donkey who rescue a princess. The rescue becomes more uncertain as the princess learns she may be married to a somewhat villainous vertically-challenged bad guy looking to be king. That’s because her attitude toward the ogre is changing and she has a secret of her own.

There’s plenty of humor, lessons about love and a trove of fairy tale characters.

Directed by Clint Reid, the musical will be presented at 7 p.m. Friday, 7 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.

Call the Union County Schools central office at 662-534-1960 for tickets, although the performances may be sold out. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children.
