The owners of a New Albany home and a Union County gardening association were recognized Tuesday for their efforts to make property more attractive with improved landscaping.

Deloris and Thomas Caviness of 606 Glade Street, New Albany received the “Residential Beautification Award” from the New Albany Sustainability Advisory Committee (NASAC). The attractively maintained home is accented by colorful plantings and walkways. Deloris and Thomas Caviness do all of their own landscape work, without help from commercial landscape workers.

New Albany MS Master Gardeners beautification award

Shown are Sandy Shaddinger and Jolyn Cooke of NASAC; Union County Master Gardeners President Kathryn Rakestraw, Dee Shields, Pat Campbell, Dian Gray Brenda Robertson, Georgia Shocklee and Martha Cook.

The Union County Master Gardeners were honored by NASAC for their work in maintaining attractive container gardens throughout the downtown area of New Albany. Year around, the Master Gardeners do seasonal planting, regular watering and other maintenance for floral containers at New Albany City Hall, the Union County Courthouse, and the Tanglefoot Trailhead. The Master Gardeners also maintain the containers and other landscaping at the classic Roosevelt-era post office building at Camp and Bankhead Streets.

The Colonial Revival post office building was built by the New Deal Public Works Administration (PWA). The cornerstone, laid in 1936, bears the names of then U.S. Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau. Jr. and then Postmaster General James A. Farley. It now belongs to the City of New Albany and houses the city’s Community Development and Tourism offices and the Union County Development Association.
